A Different Side of Gothenburg

A photo exhibition entitled “A Different Side of Gothenburg” is, starting today, on display in our hotel lobby.
“A Different Side of Gothenburg” is a project in which five people who are or have been homeless in Gothenburg took photos and shared their experiences via Instagram during December 2012. A selection of these images is now on display at Gothia Towers.
Visitors can see powerful photos depicting an amusing, sad, tragic and yet hopeful everyday life that most people are not used to seeing.

For three weeks in December, Costel, Jasmin, Peder, Sixten and Tommy – all of whom are or have been homeless in Gothenburg – took photos and shared their experiences via Instagram. Thousands of people followed these five photographers online. The images have also been published at enannanbildavgbg.se, where members of the public have had the opportunity to show their support for a photo that has touched them by making a text message donation to Gothenburg Rescue Mission, supporting their work to combat homelessness and social exclusion.

“With ‘A Different Side of Gothenburg’ we’ve succeeded in achieving one of our main goals,” says Malin Ekelund, Marketing Officer at Gothenburg Rescue Mission. “We’ve created a direct dialogue between our homeless photographers and the people of Gothenburg via the comments on Instagram. This could be anything from a simple ‘Good night!’ to ‘I’m thinking about you – hope it all works out!’ Our vision is to create one-to-one encounters that facilitate change. So it’s particularly pleasing that locals and hotel guests can now see an exhibition of the photos.”

The exhibition runs from 17 January until 15 February.
