“We have 150,000 colleagues up on the roof”

While bee hotels have started popping up here and there recently, a hotel with its own apiary is really something out of the ordinary. We asked Fredrik Andersson, Executive Chef, why keep bees on the hotel’s roof?
“We want to do our bit to protect biodiversity and aid pollination here in the local area. You might think that the top of a skyscraper seems quite high up for keeping bees, but it works well, and our 150,000 colleagues up on the roof produce a good amount of honey.”

Do you use the honey yourself and, if so, what for?
“Absolutely! We serve honey at breakfast at Upper House and have also used it to flavour our own beer, which is served in our bar. Our guests can also purchase jars of honey from our shop to take home with them.”

How do you get the bees to stay in the area around Gothia Towers? Isn’t there a risk of them leaving?
“Among other measures, our florists have created planting arrangements that attract the bees outside the entrance on the ground floor. We’ll soon have had bees here for 10 years, which suggests they are more than happy at the hotel.”
